Engraving your own kiln-formed vessel. You will have the opportunity to fuse, slump and engrave your own creations. Students that wish to concentrate entirely on engraving may do so. Clear and coloured glass, stones, burs etc. will be available for students to purchase. This course is open to both beginners and more experienced engravers.

For those who wish to repair their own ceramics, this course involves the various techniques used for mending china, including cleaning and reassembly, surface repairs, filling small chips, hand painting and finishing. Students should bring a selection of ceramic objects to work on but please note that the object is to learn the techniques but not necessarily to complete each item.

The course will include beading basic shapes, making three-dimensional shapes, making finished jewellery, experimenting with the techniques, playing with colour and making beaded beads. In order to get the most out of this course, students need to be able to bead using both peyote and brick stitch and they will be required to bring a supply of beads, crystals and other materials (details will be provided). Some materials will be available to purchase. Previous students are welcome as a different range of projects will be offered.

You will learn a quick and easy, method of making felt in small quantities for hats, bags, slippers, mitts, waistcoats etc. Alternatively, the felt can be used in creative embroidery and collage, with patterns and surface decorations as enhancements.

Realise the full potential of your sewing machine - and the feet and attachments that come with it - and discover new and exciting aspects of machine embroidery. We shall be developing ways of using different stitches and techniques to alter and decorate new fabrics, and learn how to handle tricky threads. Students should bring their own sewing machine if possible, but there are a limited number of loan machines available (must be reserved in advance).

Explore the potential for writing on top of flat areas of gold or imitation gold leaf, in small areas of a calligraphic design, to provide sparkle and interest to quotations or special greeting cards. Intended for students with some experience of calligraphy.

Come and discover the delights of a new hobby. Starting from the beginning, learn the basics of transferring a design, setting up a frame or hoop and working some simple surface embroidery stitches. We will work on a mini project which will be useful for continuing with this very absorbing pastime. Students will be required to bring some items and other materials will be on sale at moderate cost.

Another opportunity to learn the techniques of making and finishing Shaker boxes of various sizes. No previous woodworking experience is required. Students who have previous experience will be able to make small furniture items (such as a small bench, wall shelf or tray), to be agreed with the tutor beforehand. Bring your own pieces of china and learn about the processes involved in mending and restoring porcelain and other ceramic items. Disassembly, reassembly, repairing surfaces, filling holes and chips, making simple moulds, hand painting and finishing – all these techniques will be taught, but it won’t always be possible to complete each item that you bring.

All aspects of framing will be covered, including glass cutting, mount cutting and decoration, how to cut and join mitres and final assembly. Equipment provided and materials on sale.

This course will focus on designing and making mosaics in two and three dimensions which are suitable for the home or garden. Projects will include working with many types of materials including glass, ceramics and broken china. This is an interesting course with lots of scope for new ideas, but is suitable for all levels of ability. There will be a charge of about £30 to cover the cost of materials.

Learn how to use various fabrics and materials to produce a colourful piece of textile art. This practical introduction will bring rag-rugging right into the 21st century. Students will be encouraged to experiment with ideas and designs based on different hooking and prodding techniques.

Send wonderful hand-crafted greeting cards to special friends. You will learn how to incorporate a variety of design features using graphical elements and decorative collage effects. No previous experience or artistic skills are required – just a willingness to use your imagination! Materials will be available to purchase.

Students will practise the crafts of waxing and dyeing fabric using both traditional and modern techniques, including Batik. Designs will be transferred onto a variety of natural fabrics, including cotton, silk and paper and the finished results will be suitable for a range of household uses.

Explore stitch, pattern, accessories, and memory function on your computerised sewing machine, which you will need to bring. The Plan is to prepare samples which will then be mounted in your sketchbook. A useful reference for you to take away and add to in the future. Functions will include hoping fabric, elephants and lock stitch, pattern rotation, buttonholes, eyelets, use of twin needle and variegated threads.

An enjoyable learning experience for students who are enthusiastic about calligraphy and colour, suitable for beginners and more experienced calligraphers. Each student can choose their favourite letter style to complete a small project. Design, layout and the use of different pens, coloured paper and decorative effects will be considered.

Discover the fascination of creating your own glass shapes in the kiln. As well as learning the basics of fusing and slumping, students will be shown how to cut glass and will have the opportunity to try out several decorative techniques in their own simple designs. Some specialist glasses will be available to buy from the tutor.

Two different techniques in one weekend. You can try both, or just stick to one of them. Come and learn how to combine beads and slip stitch to crochet a supple, flexible, beaded spiral rope. One method, lots of lovely patterns. Can be used for necklaces, bracelets, glasses chain or bag handles. Knowledge of crochet chain would be useful, but not essential. Suitable for beginners and those who have attended previously. Beading is therapeutic and relaxing. Many wonderful items can be made using just a needle, thread and beads. There are very many different stitches and thisweekend offers you the chance to learn some of them. We will begin with an introduction to the materials needed, an explanation of some of the techniques and the showing of many samples. We will then continue by making samples of some of the different stitches and their variations, to enable students to learn as much as they can during the course.

Learn how to create three-dimensional wooden carvings using traditional hand tools and techniques. You can choose a design based on an animal or some other natural form. In addition to basic carving and shaping, you will learn how to polish and preserve the finished item.

Students will work a pattern from a range of Christmas decorations in Torchon or Tape lace, with added beads. All the patterns can be adapted to 3-D form is desired. The course is suitable for novices with a basic knowledge of lace stitches and those with further experience. Students will be asked to contact the tutor in advance to discuss patterns.
